How Our Family Makes Time for God—Imperfectly, but Genuinely

As a family, we’re not perfect. And honestly, that’s okay. Our spiritual practices aren’t always neatly structured or flawless, but they are real. We don’t have every moment of every day centered around scripture or prayer (though those moments are important too!). We’re not the “bible thumper” type, but we do try our best to model Christ-like behaviors, stay grounded in our faith, and create a home that reflects those values.

Life can get busy—especially with kids, work, and everything else in between—but we’ve learned that making time for God doesn’t always have to look like an hour-long Bible study or formal prayer time. For us, it’s about bringing God into the small, everyday moments and being intentional about how we treat one another and those around us.

Here are the three ways our family makes time for God:

1. Exhibiting Christ-Like Behaviors in Everyday Life

Faith isn’t just something we talk about on Sundays; it’s how we move through each day. Whether we’re dealing with a stressful day at work, a chaotic family schedule, or just trying to keep things together, we always try to reflect Christ-like behaviors. From showing patience when our kids are testing our limits to being kind and considerate with each other even when we’re exhausted, we believe that how we treat others speaks volumes about our faith.

We may not always get it right, but we’re intentional about making those choices and teaching our kids that kindness, love, and grace are foundational to who we are.

2. Using Technology to Connect with God’s Word

While we value tradition, we’ve found that technology can also be a great way to stay connected to God’s word. With our busy lives, it’s not always easy to sit down with a Bible every morning. But through apps, podcasts, and online devotionals, we’ve found creative ways to fit in spiritual nourishment.

Whether it’s listening to a faith-based podcast during a commute or reading a scripture of the day on a Bible app, technology allows us to stay connected to God no matter where we are. It may not look “traditional,” but it’s effective, and it works for our family—especially as our kids grow up in an age where digital tools are part of everyday life.

3. Practicing Gratitude to Keep Perspective

One of the best practices we’ve adopted as a family is a daily focus on gratitude. Every day, we take a moment to share what we’re thankful for. Whether it’s something big (like our health) or small (a peaceful moment during a busy day), this practice helps us keep our problems in perspective.

Gratitude reminds us to focus on the blessings we have instead of what we don’t. When life feels overwhelming, we pause, look around, and find something to be grateful for. It’s a simple but powerful way to stay centered and grounded in God’s goodness.

Bonus: Finding Pockets of Joy

Lastly, we make a conscious effort to search for pockets of joy throughout our day. Whether it’s watching a sunset together, sharing a silly moment with our kids, or simply taking a deep breath in the middle of a hectic schedule, these moments of joy help remind us that God is good, and He’s with us in every season.

Life can get heavy, but when we focus on these small but meaningful moments, we’re reminded that joy is always around us—even in the mess.

Final Thoughts

Our family’s spiritual practices are by no means perfect, but they are rooted in a genuine desire to stay connected to God. By exhibiting Christ-like behaviors, using technology to bring us closer to His word, practicing gratitude, and searching for joy, we’ve found ways to make time for God amidst the busyness of life.

How do you make time for God in your everyday routine? I’d love to hear about your family’s practices and any non-traditional ways you’ve found to connect with Him.
